The Importance of British Colonialism and Apartheid to South African Football

Introduction

South Africa is a country of 56.712 million people. It is a country of numerous different diverse groups and rich heritage. Part of that heritage is football. Football, known to Americans as soccer, is the most popular team sport in the world today. The World Cup is an excellent example of this, as the World Cup is the most viewed sporting event in the world. In this website there is information about the history of football in South Africa. This topic specifically relates to South African studies, as the history of football in South Africa is also closely related to British involvement in South Africa. To truly understand the meaning that football has in South Africa, it is important to understand its relationship to Apartheid, and British and Dutch colonialism. Football is a specific lens in which we can view South Africa culture. In this project, I will be analyzing several different sources. These will include scholarly articles and books on both British colonialism and Apartheid in South Africa, and how they relate to football. I will then be using those sources to understand the cultural significance of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
